Scouts are young people who are 10½ to 14 years old and are the oldest section of the Group. 1st South Hornchurch Scouts are called Somers Troop, named after the second Chief Scout of the UK, Lord Somers. The Scout Troop is split up into smaller groups called patrols. There are currently 3 patrols making up Somers Troop - Merlin, Falcon and Raven. Each patrol has a Patrol Leader (PL) and an Assistant (APL).

Somers Troop meet on a Wednesday night between 7:45 and 9:15 pm, led by the young and enthusiastic Alan, ably assisted by Paul S and the less young but equally perky Paul H and Mark. Weekly meetings are spent working towards badges, playing games, doing pottery, going bowling and much more. Scouts get to try lots of new activities too, like kayaking, abseiling, climbing, music and cooking. The troop also goes on trips, days out and best of all camps, which means sleeping in a tent, eating bugs and doing lots of outdoor activities.

The Scout Promise is:

"On my honour, I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people, and to keep the Scout law"

The Scout law is:

  • A Scout is to be trusted

  • A Scout is friendly and considerate

  • A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts

  • A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property

  • A Scout has self respect and respect for others

The Scout Motto is:

"Be Prepared"
