THE  LEADERS

...

...

At 1st South Hornchurch, we're lucky to have some of the best leaders that money can't buy. All of them enjoy what they do and are very committed to scouting. There is a good balance of young and old, providing both experience and a fresh outlook and new ideas. We are also supported by a number of parent helpers who give up their time week after week to support the section leaders. All adults involved in the group have undergone an enhanced CRB check and the Scout Association's own vetting procedures.

Kevin Cooper Russell Winston
Group Scout Leader Assistant Group Scout Leader

Kevin has been with the group for over 20 years now, starting off as a cub and working his way through all the sections. He first became a leader aged 19 with the Venture Unit, where he stayed for 6 years. Ventures then became Explorers and Kevin set up the Centurion Explorer Scouts. As Explorers was run by the district, this new role took Kev away from 1st Souths. But he soon returned in the summer of 2006 when he was offered the position of GSL. [More]

Russell started his scouting life as a Beaver with 1st Squirrels Heath where he was also a cub. He joined 1st South Hornchurch as a scout, desperately searching for something to quench his badgework thirst! After leaving Venture Scouts Russ became a Scout leader and several years later, an Explorer Scout leader. He was offered the position of AGSL for the group about five minutes after Kevin became the boss! [More]

Lindsey Cooper

Terina Brown

Beaver Scout Leader

Assistant Beaver Scout Leader

As Kevin's little sister, Lindsey's days of non-scouting freedom were numbered the moment he became GSL. It took a bit of convincing, as soon as Kev mentioned crayons and poster paint, the deal was sealed!

Terina has been with the group for a good few years now, starting off as a helper at Beavers. As time went on she became steadily more involved and is now an invaluable assistant leader with lots of motherly experience!

Penny Richardson

Kim

Beaver Scout Leader

Colony Assistant

After throwing herself whole heartedly into 1st Souths as a parent helper, Penny somehow found herself lumbered with a whole new Beaver Colony. Never one to shy away from a challenge she's doing a grand job of keeping those little ones busy and is proving an all round asset to the group!

Kim has been a colony assistant with 1st Souths for yonks! She's seen more Beavers come and go than she'd care to remember and knows all there is to know about the section...now where are those blank warrant cards...

Dave Langley

Lyn Langley

Akela - Cub Scout Leader

Pack Assistant

Dave is comparable to a Duracell battery - he just keeps going on, and on, and on...but in a good way! He's been with the group for well over 10 years, initially getting involved when his kids became members. They may have grown up and moved on but Dave has remained, along with his collection of hats for all occasions.

Lyn has been a pack assistant on and off for a decade or so now. As Dave's better half, she comes in handy when keeping an eye on his antics. Common sense, sharp wit and a woman's touch are some of her other useful attributes!

Alan Winston

Paul Hayward

Scout Leader

Assistant Scout Leader

Alan's been involved in Scouting since he was a twinkle in Mummy Winston's eye, following in the footsteps of both his parents. He began as a Beaver with 1st Squirrels Heath and managed to make it to Ventures, converting to 1st Souths somewhere along the way. Now he's a leader with more Royal connections than Jenny Bond - a holder of the Queen's Scout Award and an attendee of the State Opening of Parliament and the Queen's Garden Party.

Paul is somewhat of a Somers veteran. He's been around since the re-launch of the troop in 2006, starting off as a parent helper. He was always willing to lend a hand at weekly troop nights, days out, camps and meetings and so before long. he was being hounded to take out a warrant and become a leader. Eventually he caved in and has been busily scouting ever since!

Mark Aldridge Paul Southam
Assistant Scout Leader Assistant Scout Leader

Mark's road to leader status is a well trodden one - he was suckered into becoming helper over the period of a few months when coming to collect his son from troop nights and gradually became more and more involved until being expertly hoodwinked into taking out a warrant! Since then he's never looked back and has become an invaluable asset to the Group.

Paul was a scout with 1st South Hornchurch back in the days of the Woodpecker patrol. After leaving, he drifted in the ether for a few years, doing whatever it is that people in the ether do. Eventually though, his scouting senses started to tingle and he decided it was time to return to Somers Troop, this time as a big grown up type person.
