Kevin Cooper - Group Scout Leader

Kevin’s been with 1st South Hornchurch since he was a grubby cub, with 10p, hankie and all! He gradually moved up through the sections and, after completing his Queen’s Scout Expedition to Ben Nevis , became an Assistant Venture Scout leader. A year later and at the ripe old age of 20, he became the main leader of 1st South Hornchurch ’s Argonaut Venture Unit. As VSL Kev climbed Nevis and Snowdon, completed the London to Brighton bike ride not once, not twice, but thrice, and raised over £3000 for the unit. He remained in this position for 5 years when Venture Scouts was barbarically carved up into Explorers and the Scout Network.

After this change Kev was responsible for opening the first Explorer Scout Unit in the Hornchurch District – Centurion ESU, in September 2002. As Explorers was run at a district level, this took Kevin away from the group. It was a challenging time as Explorers was a new idea and they were poorer than Old Mother Hubbard. Fortunately a sizeable grant was secured which paid for a wealth of camping equipment and got the unit off to a good start. They soon started winning events such as the County Endurance weekend and the Kilmuir Trophy.

By January 2006, the explorer unit was doing well but unfortunately for 1st Souths, numbers had been dwindling. A few months later and Kevin was offered the role of Group Scout Leader which he heartily accepted. He believes that not so long ago, 1st South Hornchurch was one of the biggest groups in the district and he is determined to be a part of the team that returns the group to its former glory!

Outside of Scouting, Kevin has also completed the Three Peaks Challenge in a time of 19 hours, 36 minutes and 43 seconds, raising over £1,600 for the British Heart Foundation.
